Run properly it’s quiet, invisible, more comfortable than any radiator setup, and it pairs better with modern low-temperature heating sources than anything else. The catch is that underfloor heating only works as well as its design and install.

Wet Vs Electric Underfloor Heating: Why We Only Fit Wet

Search Underfloor Heating and you’ll find two entirely different products wearing the same name.

Electric systems are heating mats or cables rolled out under the floor finish. They’re cheap to buy and fast to fit, which is why they show up in bathroom refits. What that price doesn’t tell you is the running cost. Electric mats convert electricity to heat one-for-one at whatever you’re paying per unit, with nothing recovered anywhere. A wet system fed by a gas boiler does the same job for a fraction of that, and fed by a heat pump it isn’t a contest at all. There’s also no fixing a damaged cable; a fault under a tiled kitchen floor means the floor comes up. We don’t fit electric underfloor heating, in Gloucester or anywhere else.

Wet systems run warm water through pipework laid in or under the floor, drawing heat from the boiler or heat pump you already have. It’s a bigger job and it costs more on day one. It’s also the only underfloor heating we install, and here’s the reasoning:

  • It costs less to run, every year, forever: The up-front difference pays itself back and then keeps going. Over a fifteen-year horizon it isn’t close.
  • It heats the room, not a patch of floor: Water pipework spread across the full floor area warms the whole slab evenly, no warm strip in front of the sink and cold corners by the back door.
  • There’s nothing in the floor to fail: No electrical components buried under your kitchen. Pipework laid and pressure-tested properly will outlast the kitchen above it.
  • It’s heat-pump ready: Half the reason Gloucester homeowners ask us about underfloor heating is that they’re thinking about a heat pump in five years’ time. A wet system is exactly what a heat pump wants. Electric mats are a dead end.

Underfloor Heating is a Design Job, Not a Pipe-Laying Job

We get called out to plenty of underfloor heating in Gloucester that was installed correctly and still doesn’t heat the house. Almost always the pipework is fine and the design was never done.

Two figures decide whether a floor delivers what a room needs:

Pipe centres: how far apart the pipes are laid. Tighter spacing puts more heat into the room. A north-facing sitting room with a bay window and a small internal hallway do not need the same spacing, and running a uniform 200mm across an entire ground floor guarantees some rooms are comfortable while others never get there. We work the spacing out room by room from a heat loss calculation, and on most Gloucester houses it changes three or four times across one floor.

Flow temperature: how hot the water going into the floor is. Underfloor heating runs at roughly 35 to 50°C against 65 to 75°C for radiators. Too low and the floor can’t produce the output the room needs regardless of how well it’s laid. Too high and you get an uncomfortable floor, wasted gas, and on a heat pump a serious efficiency penalty. It’s set off the pipe centres, the floor construction and the finish going on top — which is why those decisions get made together, before anything is ordered.

Then the system gets commissioned: every loop balanced so flow is even across the whole floor. It’s the first thing cut from a cheap quote and the reason underfloor heating has a reputation in some quarters for cold floors. We do the heat loss calculation, the loop design and the commissioning on every job, and you get the figures in writing at handover.

New Builds vs Retrofits: Which System Your Gloucester Floor Needs

The newer estates around Quedgeley, Hunts Grove, Kingsway, Hardwicke and the edges of Hempsted were mostly built with wet underfloor heating already in the ground floor slab. If that’s your house, the system is straightforward to maintain, re-zone or extend. we service manifolds, replace actuators, upgrade zone controls and fit smart thermostats on these regularly.

Retrofit is a different conversation. The Victorian and Edwardian terraces around Kingsholm, Barton and Tredworth, and the 1930s semis through Tuffley and Longlevens, were never designed for it. Which of our three systems suits you comes down to what’s under your feet right now.

Screed system: for new floors. Pipes clipped to insulation and buried in 65 to 75mm of sand and cement screed. Best output per square metre and the cheapest of the three, because the screed does the work. It stores heat and releases it evenly across the room. The catch is that it needs a floor built from scratch, so this is the route for extensions, new builds, and renovations deep enough that the existing floor is coming out anyway. If you’re already digging out a Tuffley or Longlevens ground floor to fix damp or add insulation, this is the moment to do it.

Low-profile overlay: for existing solid floors. Insulated panels laid straight over the floor you’ve got, with pipework routed into them. Adds about 18 to 25mm of build-up. Far less disruptive than digging out, and it performs close behind screed. The question is always height: internal doors need trimming, and the transitions from kitchen to hallway and hallway to front door have to work. We measure that on the survey and tell you honestly whether it’s realistic before you commit.

Aluminium tray system: for suspended timber floors and upstairs. Aluminium spreader plates fitted between the joists with the pipework running through them. The plates conduct heat sideways across the underside of the floor deck, so you get even warmth rather than hot lines above each pipe. This is the answer for the suspended timber ground floors in the Kingsholm, Barton and Tredworth terraces. It’s how we do first-floor rooms on whole-house systems. If you want underfloor heating upstairs as well as down, this is the system that does it.

How Underfloor Heating Pairs With Your Boiler or Heatpump

This bit gets missed in cheap installs. Underfloor heating runs at a much lower flow temperature than radiators, typically 35 to 50°C compared to 65 to 75°C for radiators. That’s why a mixing valve or blending manifold is essential. It takes the hot water from your boiler and blends it down to the right temperature for the floor.

Pair underfloor heating with a heat pump and you’ve got a system genuinely designed for each other. Heat pumps run most efficiently at low flow temperatures, so SCOP figures land higher with underfloor heating than with radiators.

Underfloor Heating Costs in Gloucester

Underfloor heating is priced by floor area, and the rate depends on which of the three systems your floor calls for:

  • Screed system: around £50 per m². New solid floors: extensions, new builds, dug-out renovations.
  • Low-profile overlay: around £60 per m². Retrofit over an existing solid floor, minimal build-up.
  • Aluminium tray system: around £70 per m². Suspended timber ground floors and first-floor rooms.

As a rough sense of scale, the ground floor of a typical Gloucester three-bed runs 60 to 80m², so a screed install on a renovation lands in the low thousands rather than the five figures people often expect.
