Wet Vs Electric Underfloor Heating: Which Type For Your Gloucester Home

There are two systems and they suit very different jobs.

Wet underfloor heating uses warm water flowing through a network of pipes laid in or under the floor. It’s the right answer for whole-house systems, ground floor extensions, conservatories, and any new build. Running cost is low, the system pairs well with a gas boiler, an oil boiler or a heat pump, and a properly designed install will run for thirty years.

Electric underfloor heating uses heating mats or cables under the finished floor. Best for single rooms, particularly bathrooms and kitchens where retrofit is awkward. Quick to fit (often a day or two), low cost up front, but running costs are noticeably higher than wet because you’re paying full electricity unit prices for every watt of heat.

The two main routes are:

Take the existing floor up, lay insulation, install pipework, screed over and refit. Best result, longest disruption, usually only practical during a renovation.
Use a low profile overlay system that sits on top of the existing floor and adds 18 to 25mm to the floor height. Faster, less disruptive, almost as good thermally.

How Underfloor Heating Pairs With Your Boiler or Heatpump

This bit gets missed in cheap installs. Underfloor heating runs at a much lower flow temperature than radiators, typically 35 to 50°C compared to 65 to 75°C for radiators. That’s why a mixing valve or blending manifold is essential. It takes the hot water from your boiler and blends it down to the right temperature for the floor. Pair underfloor heating with a heat pump and you’ve got a system genuinely designed for each other. Heat pumps run most efficiently at low flow temperatures, so SCOP figures land higher with underfloor heating than with radiators.
