Air Source Heat Pumps in Gloucestershire
An air source heat pump (ASHP) is one of the most realistic low-carbon heating options for Gloucestershire homes right now, and with the government’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) taking £7,500 to £9,000 off the price for eligible homeowners in England, the numbers finally stack up for most properties. The grant amount depends on the system you’re replacing.
Priority One Plumbing designs and installs ASHP systems across the county from our base in Churchdown. We’re MCS certified, Gas Safe registered, OFTEC and City & Guilds qualified, RECC members and Vaillant & Worcester Bosch accredited installers, with over twenty years fitting heating systems across Gloucestershire.
How an Air Source Heat Pump Works
An ASHP draws latent heat out of the outside air (even well below zero) compresses it to raise the temperature, then transfers it into your central heating water to run your radiators, underfloor heating and hot water cylinder. It’s the same refrigerant principle as your fridge, running in reverse.
The number to look at is the SCOP (seasonal coefficient of performance). A well designed unit in a reasonably insulated home delivers 3.5 to 4.5 units of heat for every one unit of electricity across the year. Even with electricity priced above gas, that usually lands roughly cost neutral against a new condensing gas boiler and well ahead of oil or LPG. The outdoor unit is about the size of a small wheelie bin, sits on a concrete pad with clear airflow, and runs at 40 to 50 decibels, the same as or quieter than a normal combi boiler.
The design of the system is what decides its efficiency. We specialise in that design process; a full room-by-room heat loss survey before any quote, then install exactly what we designed. On completion we produce the building compliance certificates and the MCS certificates you need for your BUS grant.
What it Costs and th £7,500-£9,000 Boiler Upgrade Scheme
The BUS grant is £7,500, rising to up to £9,000 from summer 2026 where the heat pump replaces an oil or LPG system. It’s paid directly to us as your MCS certified installer and comes straight off your invoice, nothing to claim back. There’s also no VAT on the installation until at least March 2027 under the energy saving materials relief.
Indicative pricing across Gloucestershire:
- Small property (approximately 6 radiators): £8,000 to £10,000 before the grant, £500 to £2,500 after.
- Medium property (8–12 radiators): £10,000 to £13,500 before the grant, £2,500 to £6,000 after.
- Large property (10–16 radiators): £12,500 to £18,000 before the grant, £5,000 to £10,500 after.
Where We Install
We install ASHP’s throughout Gloucestershire:
- Air Source Heat Pumps Cheltenham: Regency and Victorian retrofits, listed buildings and conservation areas. We work with planning consultants where consent is needed.
- Air Source Heat Pumps Gloucester: the full city mix, from Kingsholm terraces to the new estates at Quedgeley, Hunts Grove and Kingsway.
- Air Source Heat Pumps Tewkesbury: off-grid oil and LPG conversions in the surrounding villages, including flood plain installs done properly.
We cover the wider county too.
A Heat Pump Works Best With the Right System Around it
Heat pumps run most efficiently at low flow temperatures, which makes underfloor heating their natural partner, SCOP figures land noticeably higher with UFH than with radiators. If you’re weighing a heat pump against a like-for-like boiler swap, our boiler installation page runs that comparison honestly: a new gas combi still wins on upfront cost, while the heat pump wins on running costs off-grid, on lifespan (fifteen to twenty years versus ten to twelve) and on direction of travel. Sometimes a hybrid or a high-efficiency boiler is the right answer; we’ll tell you straight either way.
