Two systems, very different jobs.

Wet underfloor heating circulates warm water through a network of pipes laid in or under the floor. It’s the right answer for whole house systems, ground floor extensions, conservatories and any new build. Low running cost, pairs well with both gas boilers and heat pumps, and a well designed install lasts for decades.

Electric underfloor heating uses heating mats or cables laid under the finished floor. Best for single rooms (bathrooms, kitchens, en-suites), particularly where lifting the entire floor isn’t practical. Quick install, low capital cost, but running costs are higher because you’re paying full electricity unit rates.

Joist tray system. Aluminium spreader plates with grooves for the pipework, fitted between the joists from below or above. Works well on suspended floors, but you need joist access.
Low profile overlay. Sits on top of the existing floor and adds around 18 to 25mm of build-up. Faster than tearing the floor up, less disruptive, almost as good on output.

For solid floors (more common in 1930s semis through Charlton Kings, Hatherley, Up Hatherley), the route is usually to dig out the existing floor, lay insulation, install pipework and lay a new screed. More disruptive but the best result.

How Underfloor Heating Pairs With Your Boiler or Heatpump

Underfloor heating runs at low flow temperatures, typically 35 to 50°C, compared to 65 to 75°C for radiators. A mixing valve or blending manifold takes the hot water from your boiler and drops it to the right temperature for the floor. Without one, you’d cook the floor.
