Air Source Heat Pumps Tewkesbury

Plenty of Tewkesbury and the surrounding villages sit off the gas mains. Oil and LPG dominate the heating mix in places like Twyning, Bredon, Forthampton and the Mythe, and the running costs over the last few years have been brutal. So when we’re asked about an air source heat pump (ASHP) in Tewkesbury, it’s often a straight comparison against an ageing oil boiler. And on those numbers, the heat pump wins more often than not. Additioanlly the government’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) will take £7,500-£9,000 off the price for eligible homeowners in England. The grant depends on what system is currently installed.

Priority One Plumbing covers Tewkesbury and the wider Gloucester area from our base in Churchdown. We’re Gas Safe and MCS Accredited, City & Guilds qualified as well as Oftec Certified. We’ve been fitting heating systems across Gloucestershire for over twenty years.

How an Air Source Heat Pump Works

An ASHP extracts heat from the outside air using a refrigerant circuit, compresses it to raise the temperature, and then transfers that heat into your central heating system to warm your radiators, underfloor heating and hot water cylinder. It works at outside temperatures down to around minus fifteen degrees, which is well below anything Tewkesbury sees in a normal winter.

The efficiency figure to look at is SCOP, the seasonal coefficient of performance. A well designed install will deliver between 3.5 and 4.5 units of heat for every one unit of electricity used. Compared to oil at current prices, that puts heat pumps clearly ahead on running costs in most properties. Compared to LPG, the gap is even wider.

The outdoor unit is about the size of a small wheelie bin and runs at around 40 to 50 decibels (the same as or quieter than a normal combi-boiler). It needs a flat surface and clear airflow on a side or rear wall.

The design of the ASHP system is crucial to its efficiency, we specialise in that design process, and then install the system as we designed it. Upon job completion we produce the building compliance certificates and the MCS certificates. These are crucial for getting your BUS grant, if you’re home qualifies.

Switching From Oil to an Air Source Heat Pump in Tewkesbury

This is the conversation we have most often around Tewkesbury. Oil boilers are still the default outside the gas grid, but they’re expensive to run, the price is volatile, and the storage tank takes up space. A heat pump removes all of that.

Some practical things to know about a Tewkesbury oil to heat pump swap:

  • The old oil tank can usually be removed as part of the work. We’ll arrange decommissioning and disposal, and free up the space in your garden or yard.
  • Air source heat pumps use weather compensation as standard, matching heat output to the changing British weather for steady comfort and lower running costs.
  • Oil boilers fire at full output or switch off, while air source heat pumps modulate continuously to match demand for steadier comfort and improved efficiency.
  • For homes with very low heat loss, an air to water heat pump on its own is the right answer. For very large or poorly insulated properties, a hybrid setup running alongside the existing oil or LPG boiler can sometimes make better sense.

We’re OFTEC registered, so if you’d rather stay with oil for now and just have a service or repair, we can do that too. We won’t push the heat pump if it isn’t right for your property.

Funding, Costs and the Boiler Upgrade Scheme

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) gives a £7,500 grant towards an air source heat pump in England, and it applies whether you’re replacing gas, oil or LPG, with the grant reaching up to £9,000 for oil or LPG systems , from summer 2026. Additionally, there’s no VAT on the install either (until at least March 2027 under the energy saving materials relief).

Indicative pricing for properties in Tewkesbury and the surrounding villages:

  • Small property (approximately 6 radiators): £8,000 to £10,000 + VAT before the grant, £500 to £2,500 after the grant.
  • Medium property (8-12 radiators): £10,000 to £13,500 + VAT before the grant, £2,500 to £6,000 after the grant.
  • Large property (10-16 radiators): £12,500 to £18,000 + VAT before the grant, £5,000 to £10,500 after the grant.

The grant requires us, an MCS certified installer and is paid straight to us, the installer; so it comes off your invoice rather than being claimed back later.

One thing worth thinking about specifically for Tewkesbury: properties on the flood plain. If your home has flooded in recent years, the outdoor unit needs to be raised on a plinth above the previous flood level. That’s not difficult or expensive, but it has to be designed in from the start. We’ve done several around the Severn and Avon confluence and we know what to look out for.

Why Tewkesbury Homeowners Choose Priority One Plumbing

We’re a local firm working across Tewkesbury and the rest of Gloucestershire.

Our team is Gas Safe registered, OFTEC accredited (which matters if you’re switching from oil) as well as Vaillant & Worcester Bosch accredited installers. We’re familiar with all major manufacturers including Samsung and Panasonic. We carry out a proper room by room heat loss survey on every quote, because heat pump performance lives or dies on that calculation. Anyone giving you a price for an air source heat pump without surveying the house properly is guessing, and you’ll feel it in your bills three winters later.

Our engineers turn up when they say they will, they’re polite, tidy and they explain what they’re doing in plain English. No surprise extras when the invoice arrives.
